King Cake

It looks like Modern Domestic nailed King Cake this year, basing it on a recipe from David Guas of Acadiana, Ceiba, DC Coast, and TenPenh. This photo, as usual, comes from the IFA Food Porn photo pool.

Awww, thanks for using my photo and for the link! I actually want to remake this King Cake – it was a little dry for my taste. But I love a challenge.

  2. I don’t understand why the photos always seem to be screwed up here. This one is blurred; others have the color dimmed. Why can’t you just embed the photos directly from Flickr rather than going through whatever process you use that damages them?

  3. Hmmm, I’m not sure because it looks like they’re directly embedding the flickr code. I don’t have this problem when I use my own images from flickr.

  4. No, they link to the Flickr image when you click, but the src in the img tag is pointing at their server. For example, in this case it’s
    https://internetfoodassociation.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/4361815510_1114a6ef8d_o.jpg?w=500&h=375

So they’re copying the images to their server but somehow badly munging them in the process.

  5. KC: no problems on my end. But I’m a Mac, and it magically fixes everything before it ever gets to my screen.

  6. 12th Man, I don’t think this has anything to do with Windows versus Mac, and I’m on a Mac too.

Look closely at the sugar granules on that middle slice in the photo here, then click on it and look at the same granules on the Flickr page. Everything is noticeably blurrier here.

  7. The file sizes for the two versions of this picture are noticeably different (107 kB on flickr versus 32 kB here). The people posting pictures here may save them at a lower JPEG quality to conserve space on the server.

As for the cake, it looks a tad overdone (as moderndomestic noted on her blog), but this native Louisiana son would give it a taste.

  8. Can i use this photo for promote Mardi Gras season i will link back for this post

  9. RythmOfLife, click on the photo to go to the Flickr page it came from. That’s the source to ask (and where you need to link to), not this blog post.
